Eclectic Revolution Washout

After an awesome sunny week, and setting up enough gear to have Joburg’s rooftops partying for the entire weekend, 2pm struck and the rain came showering down. The Gods were against us, so the party was taken indoors… The day was enjoyed by many chilling out, and watching a dark clouded sky covering Joburg, consume the sunset.

Thanks to all those who attended, we look forward to doing it all over again.

Been acquiring some more music this week, with one album notably sticking out. Being desk ridden the entire day, when I put the album The White Lies - Remixes on the playlist, it made happy inside. The album gave me a Depeche Mode throwback experience, with the lead singer Harry McVeigh’s leading charge over the five tracks. All of which take from different electro indie styles, giving you a short all rounder of listening pleasures. Definitely worth your attention, so give it a listen.

So since I am sharing, I should note that Kitsune Compilation 9 has been on my playlist, and once again quite a few tracks I enjoy. Holy Ghost’s track has good feeling surrounding it, great Italo Disco influences with strong love lyrics. So give the track a listen, and add the album to your collection, if you don’t have one, get out there and get it.

"Oh Yes, We Have A Blog!"

Well it has been quite a while since the last post, The Rabbit and The Elephant (Wasted Youth) have been quite busy of late playing with Lego and building Puzzles. Beyond that we have also been producing some tracks, and negotiating some deals to expand the Our Wasted Youth brand across South Africa. We have been so busy with building a Lego robot to mix with us, that we decided to put together a promo mix for all our followers. The mix is a bit of a journey crossing several timelines from the 80’s to 2010, so download and enjoy Wasted Youth’s “Who’s Who in the Zoo” promo mix, we would love to send a free Zoo Biscuit with every download, but current Municipal rules don’t allow the distributing and downloading of food items over the net.

Last month we finished a track of which just needs vocals now, so pretty soon you will be able to check it out. The Elephant and I are pretty proud of this one so the Vocals have to be perfect. So keep an eye out. We currently also negotiating a deal that will we Our Wasted Youth and Wasted Youth being sold and played in an Iconic South African brand of shops country wide. Very soon we will also begin the themed parties called “Electric Revolution”, after a very successful gig at Kitchener’s Carvery last month in Braamfontein.

Enjoy the mix, get your friends to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (click on the links and follow), things are happening be part of the next best thing to hit South Africa by storm.

We be serving the coolest Ice Cream

Its been twice now I have returned from Rustenburg, and about the same time on Saturday evening the same track plays. MGMT – Electric Feel… cute love song, but its Justice’s remix that really gives it that edge. This one has been in my folder for at least 10 months now, notice I say at least. Today a friend put the lyrics on her Facebook profile, and did not even know there was one. The point I am trying to make here is that the radio stations we are subjected too, are behind with all the non-mainstream stuff, the good stuff (Well to us at Wasted Youth). To top it all off if you going to hear a remix, its going to be on Roger Goode’s Botox Surgery where everything is huge and just plain terrible. So 5fm this ones for you if you have the balls.

Here is another one I have been saving for the right skop jol, its been one of those I have kept close to me in a very special folder. Empire of the Sun has also gotten big here in South Africa, and “We are the people” has been remixed like a whore on the corner of Voortrekker & Bedford Ave Benoni, for a while now. This gem I found early though, also mid last year. After hearing it on Saturday, on the Botox Surgery, it struck me its time everyone should have it… Oh, basically it’s the best remix you will ever hear of this track…

Ok, so two awesome tracks thus far. Now for something completely different, and Dubstep is very different but an artist called Vaski is the one who has taken it to something different. His dark twist on the genre grabbed me instantly, the same gangster feel, but I cant describe the darkness to you, you just wouldn’t understand…

The month has started off well, two favourites of ours have had new releases, Chromeo and Air. Air’s album Love 2 is not the best in their collection but definitely in the top 5, and makes up for their last one. Its classic Air with the airy dream funk only they can produce, I wonder when their Ying Yang opposites Daft Punk will release a new one? Chromeo hit it big with their new one “Night by Night”, being backed by Mountain Dew as a new campaign theme track… Its been worth the wait, and they have not lost their Jew and Palestinian Funk Effect!!!

So It Begins... and we checking your basket for the good stuff before you leave.

A while ago I heard a sample of Audacity of Huge, a terrible taster that had me craving to get hold of Simian Mobile Disco’s album “Temporary Pleasure”. I love an album which you spend money on and every single track is brilliance. There has been one track on the album I have been playing more than the others, “Off the Map” it has me wanting to lace up my pumps half way, and claim the entire dance floor. It’s sexy, and you certain to sing along to the vocals in no time, “Shower Time Live” your personal karaoke shower show will certainly have a huge new addition.
Another track I have been enjoying again is High Contrast’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I asked a friend once if there are any Drum n Bass love songs as a sarcastic joke, my bubble burst very quickly, as it turns out, there is. Now, I have always been a sucker for old classics, Julie London’s Cry Me a River one of them, but the sample in this filthy classic Drum n Bass track almost had me in tears, not just for Julie’s transposed Loop or the fact it starts without even giving the slightest hint of being DnB. It’s when the track kicks into gear, it gets me every time without fail! Okay it’s an obvious favorite for myself, why not, it’s not just a swell track, it’s legendary.
So while I enjoy interwebbing, chewing Woolworth Gum Chums and feeling slightly ripped of the pleasure the original chocolate covered raisins give me, a Soulwax track pops into my headphones. I was only introduced to Soulwax about four years ago they never grabbed me, only about two years ago when I heard Nite Versions and there new electro sound did I go insane, for some old news, for me it was like I was a child again with a handful of sweeties, I could not resist, I had to have it all. Immediately Miserable Girl was the one, but, it was Krack that slowly instilled its place in my Soundtrack of Life instead. Most of you that have heard it may agree, but those that have not… Take it in, enjoy everything about it.
“Jus lykee, die shit is die shit!”
Lets get something straight here, I am no lover of remixes screwing up old classics, yet there are some very special producers out there who know how to keep it within the boundaries of class. I was hesitant when I saw this <(ODhal’s K-Love Remix)> attached to Luther Vandross – Never Too Much, but was interested in a little listen…
“Ja bru, it’s like brilliant ey, you and lady friends can jam lekka to this one.”
